Previewing Files
Click any file in Files to open it in the browser, without downloading it. The same viewers open when you click a file attached in a chat.
What Opens Where
| File | Opens in |
|---|---|
| Documents you create in Pentos, Markdown and text files | The document editor |
Word (.docx) | The document editor, showing the document’s text |
| Code | The code editor, with syntax highlighting |
CSV, TSV and Excel (.xlsx) | A table view that loads rows as you scroll, where you can also edit |
| Images, including SVG | The image viewer |
| Video | A video player |
| Audio | An audio player |
| A new browser tab |
You can read anything shared with you. Editing depends on your role.
Files Without a Preview
PowerPoint, Keynote, Pages and Numbers files cannot be previewed in the browser. Pentos tells you so and offers a download instead. You can still store, share and download them as usual.
Some videos use formats browsers cannot play, such as HEVC or ProRes. Pentos detects this when you upload and shows a message with a Download file button instead of a black player.
While a File Is Being Checked
A new file is checked and scanned right after upload. You can open your own files straight away, and edit your own images too; people you share them with can open them once the check finishes.
Security
- Isolated content: files are served from separate storage domains, not from the Pentos app itself.
- No scripts: web pages, SVG and other files that could carry scripts are served so that nothing in them can run.
- Access checked: Pentos checks your access each time it gives your browser a link to a private file.
Public files open for anyone with their link. See Private & Public.
