Editing Messages
You can edit any message you sent in a direct message, group chat, or channel, including your replies in a thread. You can’t edit other people’s messages.
Who Can Edit
- Direct messages and group chats: You can edit your own messages.
- Channels: Members and Admins can edit their own messages. Viewers can’t edit, including messages they sent before their role changed to Viewer. Edit still appears on a Viewer’s own messages, but saving shows “Sorry, viewers can’t edit messages in this channel.” See Sharing & Permissions.
How to Edit a Message
- Click the + button under your profile picture next to the message, or right-click the message.
- Click Edit. The Edit Message editor opens with the message’s current text.
- Make your changes. You have the full formatting toolbar, tables and codeblocks, emoji, math symbols, links, and AI Assist.
- Click Save changes (the disk icon at the top right of the editor), or press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on Mac).
Saving keeps the editor open so you can keep working. If you close it with unsaved changes, Pentos asks whether to Save Changes or Discard Changes.
You can edit only the text of a message. To change its attachments, delete the message and send a new one. See Message Actions.
What Others See
- Updated in real time: Everyone in the conversation or channel sees the new text right away.
- Edited marker: An (edited) label appears next to the message’s time. The time still shows when the message was first sent.
- Latest version only: Collab shows only the newest version of a message. There are no tabs for switching between the edited and original text.
- No new notifications: Editing doesn’t notify anyone, even if you add an @mention.
- Search: members can still find the message in search using words you removed in an edit, though the result shows your edited text. To remove text completely, delete the message.
