Memory

Memory is your personal knowledge base inside Pentos. As you chat, Pentos automatically picks up durable facts about you (your preferences, the projects you’re working on, decisions you’ve made) and saves them as private, encrypted memories. When you send a new message with Personalize enabled, the AI is given your saved memories alongside your Pentos Profile so its responses are more aligned with you.

You can also see exactly what Pentos has remembered, edit anything that’s off, add memories manually, and delete anything you don’t want kept. And you can just ask the AI to remember, change, or forget something directly, and it will do it for you once you approve the change.

How Memory Works

  • Automatic extraction. As you send messages across Chats, Collab DMs, and Channels, Pentos quietly identifies new long-term facts and saves them to your memory. Trivial messages (“ok,” “thanks”) are ignored. Extractions are batched and run on a cooldown so they never block your conversations. You can turn automatic memory creation off entirely from Settings > Data > Memories; your existing memories stay put.
  • Personal only. Your memory contains only facts derived from messages you authored. Nothing from another user can ever land in your memory, even in shared chats or channels.
  • Categorized. Each memory is filed under a category (for example, preferences, projects, decisions) so you can scan them quickly.
  • Manual entries are first-class. You can add memories yourself at any time. Manual memories carry full confidence and are treated the same as auto-extracted ones.
  • Sent in full. With Personalize on, your whole memory is sent with each message, up to about 6,000 bytes of text. If your memory grows past that, facts about who you are and your preferences are kept first, followed by relationships, technical details, projects, decisions, and everything else. The AI can also search your memories on its own when it needs to.
  • Encrypted at rest. Every memory is encrypted under a per-user key. Pentos staff and other users cannot read your memories.

Memory and Personalize

Two separate controls govern memory, and they work independently:

  • Personalize (the toggle in the chat input menu) controls whether Pentos uses your memory. With Personalize on, Pentos sends both your Pentos Profile and your memories to the AI for that message. With Personalize off, neither your profile nor your memory is shared with the model for that message. Personalize is per message and is on by default for new users. You can turn it off for a single message from the chat input menu, or change your default in Settings > Chats > Preferences under AI Settings.
  • Create new memories (a toggle in Settings > Data > Memories) controls whether Pentos forms new memories. When it is on, which is the default, Pentos keeps learning durable facts from your messages. When it is off, no new memories are created or updated, but your existing memories are untouched and are still used whenever Personalize is on.

Personalize decides whether memories are read into a response. Create new memories decides whether new memories are written. Turning one off does not affect the other.

Asking the AI to Remember, Change, or Forget

Beyond automatic extraction, you can tell the AI directly and it will curate your memory for you:

  • “Remember that my dog’s name is Mochi” saves a new memory.
  • “Update my job title to Staff Engineer” edits the matching memory.
  • “Forget where I live” deletes that memory.

Before the AI saves, changes, or deletes a memory this way, it shows you exactly what it is about to do and waits for your approval, so nothing changes without your say-so. This works when Personalize is on, and it runs alongside the usual automatic extraction, giving you a faster, explicit way to keep your memory accurate in the moment.

Viewing and Managing Memories

Open Settings, select Data from the left sidebar, and click the Memories sub-tab to see everything Pentos has remembered about you. Memories are paginated, with the most recent at the top.

Turning Memory Creation On or Off

At the top of the Memories tab is a Create new memories toggle. Leave it on, which is the default, and Pentos keeps forming and updating memories as you chat. Turn it off and Pentos stops creating or updating any memories, across every surface, until you turn it back on. This toggle never deletes anything: your existing memories remain and are still used in responses whenever Personalize is on.

Adding a Memory

  1. Click + Add Memory at the top of the list.
  2. Type the fact you want Pentos to remember.
  3. Pick a category from the dropdown.
  4. Click Save.

The memory is encrypted and saved right away, and is included in your next message with Personalize on. It appears in memory searches within a few minutes, once it finishes indexing.

Editing a Memory

  1. Click any memory row to open the Memory Info modal.
  2. Update the text or change the category in the editor.
  3. Click Save.

Edits are encrypted and apply to your next message right away; memory searches reflect the new wording within a few minutes, once it is re-indexed.

Deleting a Memory

  1. Click the trash icon on the memory row.
  2. Confirm the deletion.

Deletes are immediate and final. The memory is removed from your encrypted file and from semantic search at the same time.

Memory Info Modal

Clicking a memory opens the Memory Info modal, which has three sections:

  • Details. The memory’s unique ID, when it was created, when it was last used in a chat, and how many times it has been used.
  • Editor. The memory text and category, ready to update and save.
  • History. A per-memory audit log of every create, edit, and delete event tied to this memory, including the time, the action, and the request that triggered it. The History feed is where you review a memory’s audit trail; memory changes are kept here and are not mixed into the global Settings > Logs page.

Memory in Message Info

Open the Message Info panel for an AI response and look at the References section. It lists the memories the AI looked up on its own while answering (for example, when it searched your memory), along with any files, chats, or other items it read. Your memory that is sent automatically with every Personalize message is not listed there item by item.

Privacy and Security

  • Per-user keys. Your memory is encrypted with a key tied to your account. Even Pentos engineers running database queries can only see categories and timestamps, never the underlying memory text.
  • Owner-scoped writes. Every change to your memory is scoped to your user account. No other user can ever write to your memory. The AI only adds, changes, or removes a memory when you explicitly ask it to and approve the change; it can never do so silently.
  • Injected as reference only. When memories are given to the AI for a response, they are provided as reference data about you, clearly separated from your instructions, so a saved note can never hijack how the AI behaves.
  • Auditable. Every create, edit, and delete is logged to the History feed inside that memory’s Memory Info modal.
  • Always reversible. You are the only one who can permanently change your memory. Pentos does not lock you out of any entry, no matter how it was created.
