Notifications
Pentos keeps you informed about important activity across the platform through real-time notifications. Whether someone shares a chat with you, updates a shared file, or mentions you in a conversation, you will know about it immediately.
All notifications are delivered within about one second of the triggering action via a live sync connection. You do not need to refresh the page.
You can see a full history of your notifications in Settings > Notifications. Opening an item with an unread notification clears its badge immediately, or you can mark all notifications as read at once from Settings > Notifications.
Chat Notifications
When you are part of a shared chat, Pentos notifies you whenever something changes that affects your access or the chat itself.
What Triggers a Notification
| Event | Who Gets Notified | Badge? |
|---|---|---|
| Chat shared with you | You | Yes |
| Your access removed | You | No |
| Your permissions changed | You | Yes |
| Shared chat archived | All shared members | No |
| Shared chat restored | All shared members | Yes |
| Shared chat deleted | All shared members | No |
| User leaves a chat you own | You (the owner) | Yes |
| Shared chat renamed | All members | No |
| Shared chat pinned or unpinned | All members | No |
Silent notifications (renames, pin changes) update your sidebar in real time without showing a badge. This prevents noise from routine housekeeping while keeping the chat state accurate.
Losing access to a chat, or its owner archiving or deleting it, takes you off the chat if you have it open, with one message, and adds no badge, since you can no longer open the chat to clear it. The notification still appears in Settings > Notifications.
Notification Badge
When an actionable notification arrives, a red dot appears on the affected chat in the left sidebar and on the Chats section header. The badge clears automatically when you open the chat.
Tips
- If a shared chat disappears from your sidebar, you may have been unshared. Check Settings > Notifications to confirm.
- Notification badges only appear for events that require your attention. Silent updates like renames keep your sidebar clean.
- See Sharing & Permissions to learn how to share chats and manage access.
- See Logs to review a full history of actions taken on your chats.
File Notifications
When you are part of a shared file or folder, Pentos notifies you whenever something changes that affects your access or the resource itself.
What Triggers a Notification
| Event | Who Gets Notified | Badge? |
|---|---|---|
| File or folder shared with you | You | Yes |
| Your access removed | You | Yes |
| Your permissions changed | You | Yes |
| Shared file or folder archived | All shared members | Yes |
| Shared file or folder restored | All shared members | Yes |
| Shared file or folder deleted | All shared members | Yes |
| Shared file or folder permanently deleted | All shared members | Yes |
All file-related notifications are badge-worthy. Unlike chats, there are no silent file notifications, since any change to a shared resource is considered relevant to all members.
Notification Badge
When a notification arrives, a red dot appears on the affected item in your file list and on the Files section in the sidebar. The badge clears automatically when you open the file or folder.
Tips
- If a shared file disappears from your Shared With Me view, you may have been removed. Check Settings > Notifications to confirm.
- When an owner archives or deletes a shared folder, all members are notified at once.
- See Sharing & Permissions to learn how to share files and manage access.
- See Logs to review a full history of actions taken on your files.

Unread Indicators
Conversations and channels with unread notifications show a badge in the sidebar so you can see at a glance what needs your attention. The section header also shows a badge when any item within it has unread activity.
Silent Updates
Some events refresh your UI without showing a badge. Renames, description updates, and archive or unarchive events update your sidebar in real time but are not considered actionable, so no badge appears. This keeps your notification count focused on things that actually require your attention.
Active Viewer Suppression
Pentos is smart about when to send badges. If you are currently viewing a conversation, you will not receive a badge for activity happening in that conversation. For example, if you are watching a channel and someone reacts to your message, you will see the reaction in real time but will not get a separate badge for it. This prevents unnecessary noise.
