Editing Spreadsheets
CSV, TSV and Excel (.xlsx) files open in a table view in Pentos, where you can read them and edit them without downloading anything. The same table view opens when you click a spreadsheet attached in a chat or in Collab.
Viewing a Table
Click the file to open it. The first row is shown as the header, and more rows load as you scroll, up to the first 50,000 rows. Download the file to see anything past that.
- Excel files: Pentos shows an Excel file’s table once the file has been converted to text, which happens in the background after upload. If it hasn’t been converted yet, click Extract contents. If the conversion failed, click Retry extraction.
- Rows that don’t line up: if some rows have a different number of cells than the header, Pentos tells you how many. This usually means a value in the file contains a line break that was never quoted, so one record was split across two rows.
- Numbers files: can’t be shown in the browser. Download them instead.
Editing a Table
- Click Edit at the top of the table. It appears once the whole file has loaded, so in a long file, scroll to the end first.
- Click any cell to change it, including the header.
- Use Add row and Add column below the table to add more, and the delete buttons on a row or a header cell to remove one.
- Click Save, or Cancel to discard your changes.
Saved appears next to the file name when your changes are saved, and Pentos asks before closing if anything is unsaved.
Saving and Versions
- CSV and TSV files: saving replaces the file’s contents, and the file keeps its format. The first time you save, Pentos keeps the original as a version, so you can always get back to it.
- Excel files: your edits are saved alongside the original
.xlsx, which is never changed.
When you download a spreadsheet you’ve edited, you can choose the current version or an earlier one, and for an Excel file, the Original as uploaded.
Permissions
You can edit spreadsheets you own and ones shared with you as an Editor or Admin. With Viewer access, you can read the table but not save changes. See Sharing & Permissions.
Limits
- Size: files up to 2 MB can be edited. Larger files open read-only.
- Rows: the table shows up to the first 50,000 rows, and files with more can’t be edited in Pentos.
