Choosing an Image Model

Pentos gives you image models from several AI providers for creating and editing images. The model selector shows what each one costs, what it can do, and what its provider keeps of your request.

Available Models

ProviderModels
OpenAIGPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, GPT Image 2.5 Flare
GoogleNano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana 2 Lite
xAIGrok Imagine 2.0
Black Forest LabsFLUX.2 Dev, FLUX.1 Schnell

Every model can create images, and all of them except FLUX.1 Schnell can edit them. Nano Banana 2 Lite is the default until you choose your own. Models are added and retired over time, so the model selector always shows what you can use today.

How to Select a Model

  1. Open the AI panel: click New > Image to create an image, or Edit with AI on an open image.
  2. Click the model name in the panel to open the model selector.
  3. Choose a provider, then a model. Its details appear on the right.
  4. Click Select.

Model Details

  • Cost: how many points one image costs, or Free! for a model that costs none. Hover over the info icon next to Cost to see the model’s price for one 1024×1024 image.
  • Data Retention: what the model’s provider keeps of your request: None for Grok Imagine, Not logged for FLUX, Up to 30 days for GPT Image, and Up to 55 days for Nano Banana. See Data Retention.
  • Supports: Generation, Editing, or Generation for a model that can only create images.
  • Country of Origin: where the model’s maker is based.
  • Use my API key: for OpenAI, Google and xAI models. See Using Your Own API Key.

When an image runs on your own key, Cost and Data Retention read Your API key.

Models for Editing

In Edit with AI, models that can only create images are marked Generation only and can’t be selected. If your default image model can’t edit, Pentos uses a similar model from the same provider that can, and the edit costs that model’s points.

Using Your Own API Key

Your own API keys work for image models too:

Image modelsKey used
GPT ImageYour OpenAI key
Nano BananaYour Gemini key
Grok ImagineYour Grok key
FLUXAlways Pentos’s connection
  1. Select a model in the model selector.
  2. Turn on Use my API key in its details. If you haven’t saved a key for that provider yet, click Add API key to add one.
  3. Click Select.

Images made with your own key cost no points. The toggle starts on when Use My Key is on in Settings > Chats > Preferences, under AI Settings. If the provider refuses your key, Pentos tells you which key to check and doesn’t switch to its own connection.

In chats, images follow the message: when a message runs on your own key, the images it creates or edits use your key for that image model’s provider, if you’ve added one. See Creating Images.

Not Enough Points

If a model costs more points than you have left, the Select button reads Add Points and opens the upgrade options. Models that cost no points, and models running on your own key, can always be selected.

Setting a Default Model

Open Settings, select Chats, open the Preferences tab, and under AI Preferences choose your Image Model. The AI panel opens on it, and the AI uses it when you ask for an image in a chat without naming a model. If your default model is retired, Pentos uses Nano Banana 2 Lite instead.
