Editing Images

Open an image in Files to view it, edit it with the built-in editor, or describe a change and let AI make it. Every save becomes a new version of the file, so your original is never overwritten.

The Image Viewer

Click an image to open it. The header has two edit buttons:

  • Edit image: opens the built-in editor.
  • Edit with AI: opens the AI panel.

The side panel has three tabs: Manage (details and sharing), Versions and Comments.

You can edit your own images right away, while a new image’s security check finishes in the background.

Built-In Editor

The editor’s tabs cover the usual tools:

TabWhat It Does
FinetuneAdjust brightness, contrast, HSV, blur and warmth
AdjustCrop, rotate and flip
FiltersApply preset filters
AnnotateAdd text, shapes, arrows and drawings
WatermarkPlace a watermark
ResizeChange the width and height

Click Save to save the result as a new version; the viewer switches to it. The built-in editor works with JPEG and PNG images up to 25 MB.

AI Editing

  1. Click Edit with AI.
  2. Describe the change in your own words, for example “turn the sky into a stormy sunset”.
  3. Choose a model, if you want a different one. The model selector opens on your default image model, shows what each model costs in points, and lets you pick only models that can edit. For OpenAI, Google, and xAI models, you can turn on Use my API key to use your own key instead of points. See Choosing an Image Model.
  4. Send. A preview appears over your image.
  5. Click Accept to save it as a new version, or Reject to discard it.

Good to know:

  • Previews cost points: the points are charged when the preview is made, whether you accept it or not. Previews made with your own API key cost none.
  • AI edits are generative: the model redraws the image from your description rather than changing one exact spot.
  • Models change over time: new models are added and older ones retired, so the model selector always shows what you can use today. Set your default image model in Settings > Chats > Preferences. See Setting a Default Model.

Creating Images

To create a new image with AI, click New > Image in the left sidebar, or ask the AI in a chat. You can also ask the AI in a chat to change an image. See Creating Images.

Versions

Every save, from the built-in editor, from AI, or from a change the AI makes in a chat, becomes a version of the image.

  • Versions tab: lists the original and every saved version. Click one to view it.
  • Restore this version: makes an earlier version the current one again, as a new version, so nothing is lost.
  • Always current: wherever the image appears, in the Files grid, in previews, in chat attachments and in downloads, Pentos shows the newest version. People you shared the image with see it too.
  • One level: edits always build on the original file, so the version list stays flat.

Versions are saved in the same folder as the original, inherit its sharing, and count toward the owner’s storage. Each version can be up to 25 MB.

Deleting

Deleting the image moves it to the Recycle Bin; its versions stay with it and come back if you restore it. Permanently deleting it removes every version too. For more, see Download, Archive & Delete.
