Threaded Messages

Threads let you branch off from any AI response into a side conversation in the right sidebar, so you can explore a topic without affecting the main chat.

How Threads Work

A thread starts from an AI response. When you send a message in a thread, the AI sees the main chat up to and including that response, plus the messages in the thread. Messages in the thread stay out of the main chat, so later messages in the main chat do not see them.

  • One thread per response: Each AI response has a single thread. Opening Thread again on the same response opens the same thread.
  • No nesting: You can start a thread from a main chat response, but not from a message inside a thread.

Creating a Thread

Click the + button beneath the AI provider’s logo to open the message menu and select Thread. You can also right-click anywhere on the message to open the same menu.

The Thread button in the message menu

A response that already has a thread shows a thread button. Click it to open the thread again.

When to Use Threads

Threads are useful when you want to:

  • Explore a tangent: Ask a follow-up without derailing the main conversation.
  • Stay organized: Keep a sub-topic in one place in a long conversation.
  • Dig into one answer: Ask detailed questions about a single response while the main chat moves on.

If your follow-up builds directly on the current flow, continuing in the main chat is usually the better choice.

Supported Features

Thread messages support the same features as main chat messages, including editing, formatting, attachments, regenerating, and message info.
