Creating Images
Describe an image and an AI model creates it for you. You can create one from Files, or ask the AI for one in a chat. Either way, the image is saved to your Files, where you can edit, share and download it like any other image.
In Files
- Click New > Image in the left sidebar.
- In the panel on the right, describe the image you want, in up to 1,000 characters.
- To use a different model, click the model name and pick one. See Choosing an Image Model.
- Send. A preview appears.
- Click Accept to save the image, or Reject to discard it and try a different description.
Once you accept, the image opens in the image viewer, so you can keep working on it with AI or the built-in editor. Every change is saved as a new version. See Editing Images.
Images you create in Files are square.
Where It’s Saved
- Your folders: the image is saved to the folder you have open.
- Home and Pentos folders: in Home or another folder Pentos created, the image is saved to Creations.
- Shared: Pentos asks first, then saves the image to your own files, where you can share it.
- Folders you’ve shared: Pentos reminds you first that everyone the folder is shared with will be able to see the image.
What It Costs
Each image costs points, charged when the preview is created, whether or not you accept it. The model selector shows each model’s cost before you send. If a model costs more points than you have left, sending opens the upgrade options instead.
With Use my API key on, OpenAI, Google and xAI models run on your own key and cost no points. See Using Your Own API Key.
In a Chat
Ask the AI for an image in any chat, for example “Create an image of a lighthouse at dawn”. The AI asks you to approve before it creates the image, unless you’ve chosen Always approve for it, then attaches the image to its reply. See Approving Actions.
- Model: the AI uses your default image model unless you name another, for example “use Nano Banana Pro”.
- Shape: square, unless you ask for another shape: wide (16:9), tall (9:16), 4:3 or 3:4.
- Where it’s saved: in the chat’s folder, under Chats in your Files.
- Cost: the image’s points are charged once it’s saved, and included in the response’s points in Message Info. When the message runs on your own API key and you’ve added a key for the image model’s provider, the image uses your key and costs no points.
Changing an Image in a Chat
Ask the AI to change an image it made, or one in your Files, for example “make it look like a watercolor”. The AI edits the image’s newest version, saves the result as a new version of that image, and attaches it to its reply. It can change images you own and images shared with you as an Editor or Admin.
If your default image model can’t edit, such as FLUX.1 Schnell, Pentos uses a similar model that can.
Good to Know
- Refused descriptions: a model’s safety filter can refuse a description. Pentos tells you, and nothing is charged. Try different wording or another model.
- Your key is refused: if a provider rejects your API key, Pentos tells you which key to check and doesn’t switch to its own connection.
- Models change over time: new models are added and older ones retired, so the model selector always shows what you can use today.
